Moving to Germany? How to Take the Right Decision?
Do you plan to move to Germany?
Are you facing the question: Should I move to Germany (or to any other country)?
If you are reading this, chances are that you have already taken your decision. But you might still not accepted it completely and have some doubts if that’s the right thing to do.
Moving to a new country is (not) an easy decision.
Not for most people anyway.
In our minds, we associate moving abroad with going somewhere really far away, leaving our family, friends, familiar environment and basically cutting off all existing connections in our lives and starting from scratch.
Even if it is for a limited time period, most people think of going abroad as of something BIG, a big change, a big step, a major milestone in their lives where they start a new experience and a new chapter. In their career, private life or both.
Thinking about all the changes coming along with your move CAN and IS overwhelming.
It can turn into a big dilemma: Should I go, somewhere in the “unknown”, throw myself into the cold water, without knowing anyone or anything about how things work?
Or should I stay and keep living my current life, in my safe, well-known environment?
Should I take the risk or be happy with what I already have?
How do you take the right decision?
In order to take the right decision, you need to ask the right question.
Should I move or should I stay is not the right question, simply because it implies a Yes or No-answer. An “Yes” or a “No” answer does not share enough depth on your decision process.
The question that you need to examine is: WHY?
Why should you move?
Your ultimate choice (of moving or staying where you are) can be justified with thousands of arguments: a better job, a secured paycheck, better weather, more friends, new opportunities, new travel destinations, etc., etc…
However, your ultimate goal should be not rationalizing or explaining your choice, but picturing: Who do you want to become on your way?
Who do you want to become?
It is never about what we want to do, where we want to go or what benefits we are hoping to get. It is about who you want to become!
What is the life you picture for yourself and what are you inspired to be? What are the skills, habits and things you want to learn, change or try out? What type of person do you want to be and how is your decision going to help you become this person?
Imagine your future self in a year or two from now and write down 5 adjectives or personal traits that you want to develop in the near future.
Then, look back at your two choices: to move or to stay?
Which one will help you become who you want to be?
Which one inspires you more?
Which one is more interesting, exciting and brings a huge smile on your face?
Which one will you regret not having done in 10 years from now?
This will determine your choice.
Don’t worry if it feels difficult to say “bye” to the other option. The fact that your choice feels so difficult shows that your both options mean a lot to you. But don’t hang on the fact that there are people who love you. Don’t be scared. Those people will always remain in your life and you will find a way to keep them there.
Go for what pulls you ahead, what excites you and what makes you feel you have wings to fly. Enjoy the experience, embracing the challenges in order to become who you want to be.
Respect Your Choice
Whatever is important to you, respect your choice. If you value your safety and stability, learn to appreciate your everyday routine and in order to overcome being bored, find new local activities that will keep you excited.
If you value more the challenge, the adventure and looking for a new rollercoaster drive, then catch that train and enjoy the ride. With all its ups and downs, at the end it is always worth it and it will make you feel proud of yourself.
Let me know in the comments below, what is an important decision that you struggle with and wonder which way to go. What pulls you towards one choice and what keeps you back?
